Edward Elric: Vinyl Automail by Ko-chan Edward Elric: Vinyl Automail by Ko-chan
Character: Edward Elric (w/ automail + dragon spear)

Series: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi/Fullmetal Alchemist

:iconko-chan: as Edward Elric

:iconannedyari: as San (Mononoke Hime)

My previous Edward cosplay was completely failsauce, so this is my attempt to start again from scratch. It's still in the works (these pics are as of Jan [SacAnime] 2010), as I plan to make a few more sets of automail that look much better than the crappy vinyl one shown here.

Woot for using my real hair. :boogie: (I see so many failed attempts using cheap wigs, I made a point to grow my hair out again for this [and Maka Albarn...] )

The pants are actually really tight (the waist goes up to my ribs, for some reason) so it's hard to sit down in them. D: I'm hoping to acquire another pair that fit better sometime down the line.

- Shirt (added white bias tape and buttons)
- Under Shirt (thrift store)
- Binding (2 strips of 1.5" Ace bandages, black sports bra underneath)
- Shoes (hand painted after purchasing... they were brown)
- Leather pants ($18 at a thrift store)
- White wrist length gloves
- Pocket watch ($9 on ebay)
- Brown belt ($12 at Target)

- Red jacket (suiting material + lining + symbol)
- Vinyl automail (brown vinyl, spray paint, black ballroom length glove, black elastic, industrial snaps)
- Dragon spear (retractable painter's pole, carved foam block [dragons], rubber dip [the kind used for renewing handles for hand tools... used to coat the foam so the paint wouldn't eat through it], small length of PVC pipe, cheap plastic dagger [on sale at the Halloween outlet], lots of spray paint)
- Alphonse's severed hand (stuffed black glove w/vinyl armor [for reenactment of Elric Telepathy scene])

Planned improvements/additions:

- Detachable white fur trim (for Briggs coat)
- Briggs leg automail
- Briggs "Northern" automail (possibly... and I'd have a plastic and a metal set for this one, too)

- Metal automail (for personal photoshoots)
- Plastic automail (for cons, since metal ones are banned now)
- Foot/leg automail (probably going to use a pair of gray/silver toe socks + just fabric paint the seams/bolts on, then maybe have plastic/metal sheeting armor over the rest of my leg)

- Metal version of Al's severed arm (maybe)
- More detailed dragons for spear (maybe)

I'm planning on making an Edward cosplay, but I'm having trouble with the red jacket.

I can't find any sewing patterns of a jacket with a hood, and we don't know how to make a hood either.

Did you use a pattern and alter it (or just a pattern), or did you make it from scratch?

Any other tips would help, thanks!

I never use patterns, I just kind of look at it and figure it out as I go. ^^;

A hood is basically a waning moon shape. Start with a square, cut a curve on one side, then cut another curve facing the same direction on the opposite side of the larger curve. Leave the flat edge un-sewn, but sew along the larger first curve. Turn it right side in and you should have something resembling a hood.

how did you make the arm

I made the one pictured here out of vinyl and industrial snaps, then painted it silver. My new (better) one is made of wonderflex, but I have yet to post pics here other than on my "Cosplay I've Done" journal.
